Eau Claire Community Description
To get a sense of the true flavour of Calgary and to maintain close proximity to some of the city’s premiere events, there’s no neighborhood that can touch the location of Eau Claire. Commonly recognized as one of the more popular areas within the entire city, Eau Claire is just north of the downtown centre and immediately south of the Bow River. Calgary’s Festival District is stationed here with its modernization and re-development commitments that stand in addition to the several riverside condominiums, shopping centres, restaurants, hotels, urban parkland, and a large public plaza. The neighborhood of Eau Claire was originally established in the late 1880s and now boasts a population of 1,800 residents with a median household income of approximately $80,000. The real estate available in the area is primarily condominiums and apartments – similar to a standard urban city atmosphere.
Eau Claire’s public school students attend Connaught/Kingsland Elementary, Mount Royal Junior High, and Western Canada Senior High School. Meanwhile Catholic school students are assigned to attend Sacred Heart Elementary, St. Monica or St. Michael Junior High, and St. Mary’s Senior High School. Due to their not being many school students found within the neighborhood, these schools are located somewhat at a distance though still nearby.
Prince’s Island Park is another premiere amenity within close proximity of Eau Claire. This park acts host to a number of events throughout the year including the Calgary Folk Music Festival; Carifest; Shakespeare in the Park; and a variety of busking-related events.
The Eau Claire Market is the primary attraction of the neighborhood and a point of pride for many residents. This mall is a hub for many local businesses, small shops, and art galleries as well as being the home to a six-screen Cinema Odeon multiplex, a food court, and a high number of restaurants. To coincide with the reconfiguration of the new Eau Claire Plaza, the current Market is set to be demolished and rebuilt in the near future. The development plan in place is to install a market that will continue to cater to the neighborhood’s existing population as well as to a larger and more diverse demographic.
Calgary Transit maintains several stops throughout the area however many choose to walk as there are numerous amenities all found within walking distance. Just on foot, you have a multitude of shopping opportunities, restaurants, and employment possibilities, and there’s an extended network of pedestrian pathways to accompany residents who wish to travel via foot or bike.
Whether it is to satisfy your adrenaline or to sit back, relax and take in all the neighborhood has to offer, Eau Claire has it all. With its’ ties to downtown Calgary, the real estate here is already set at a high property value. The community’s residents often have a very strong influence over developments in the city. Eau Claire makes an excellent spot for young professionals or those who wish to be near to some of Calgary’s finest attractions.
