SouthWood

The community of Southwood is found in the southwestern part of Calgary with a population of 6,100 residents bounded by the communities of Hayboro to the north, Willow Park to the east, Canyon Meadows to the south, and Braeside to the west. Predominantly a single family residential community, developments began in 1959 and have since gone on to include the Southwood Corner mini mall, Bentley’s Pub, a Box brand grocery store, Planet Organic Market, Humpty’s Restaurant, and Southwood Automotive car repair. Its’ proximity to major transportation routes that lead to the downtown area, Fish Creek Provincial Park, and the Glenmore Reservoir offers residents a unique blend of city and town in the neighborhood of Southwood.

Public school students of the community attend Le Roi Daniels elementary, Fairview junior high, and Henry Wise Wood senior high schools while Catholic school students attend St. Stephen elementary and junior high, and Bishop Grandin senior high school.

The Southwood neighborhood is fortunate in its location with a multitude of amenities that surround it. Down 14^th Street, there are recreational opportunities that the whole family can enjoy at the Glenmore Reservoir and Fish Creek Provincial Park. Elbow Drive intersects with the community and will take residents all the way to the downtown core. However one never needs to travel as far as downtown to enjoy premier shopping opportunities with Southcentre Mall located immediately east of the community. There are further chains, boutiques, and businesses that meet at the MacLeod Trail and Glenmore Trail intersection, only a few minutes north of the neighborhood.

The community has consistently strived to provide as much service to its residents as possible, free from constraints and transportation is no different in this sense. Never an issue, Southwood is equipped with several bus routes that run throughout the community as well as the C-Train that cuts through the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Anywhere a resident wants to travel, they are covered.

Committed to the protection of nearby parks, trails, and green spaces as well as allowing residents to enjoy the more commercial and public aspects of Calgary, the neighborhood of Southwood offers its’ residents a number of benefits. As the community continues to develop and take shape, it is one of the few communities that has such a mosaic of amenities that populate its’ side streets while at the same time remaining simply a collection of residents who want a quiet property to come home to at night.
